How to Pick the Perfect Watermelon

Look for a Uniform Shape A good watermelon should be symmetrical and firm, without any dents, lumps, or irregular bumps. This indicates even growth and proper ripening.

Check the Field Spot The field spot (where the watermelon rested on the ground) should be creamy yellow or golden. A white or green spot means it’s underripe.

Tap for a Deep Hollow Sound Give the watermelon a light tap—a ripe one will sound deep and hollow, while an underripe or overripe one will sound dull.

Feel the Weight A heavier watermelon means it has more water content, making it juicier and sweeter. Compare similar-sized ones and choose the heaviest.

Inspect the Webbing Brown webbing (scarring lines) is a good sign! It means bees pollinated the flower, leading to a sweeter watermelon.

Check the Stem A dry, brown stem indicates ripeness, while a green stem suggests the watermelon was picked too early and might not be sweet.

Avoid Shiny Watermelons A dull, matte finish is better than a shiny one. Shiny watermelons are often underripe and lack full flavor.
